There’s no single “best” time to road-trip Australia - the continent is so big that the perfect month depends entirely on which slice of it you’re driving. Get the timing right and you’ll have blue skies and open roads; get it wrong and you’ll meet closed tracks, brutal heat or wet-season deluges.
Go north in winter
It sounds backwards, but Australia’s north is at its best in the dry season, May to September. Tropical Queensland, the Northern Territory’s Top End and WA’s Kimberley swap humid, road-closing monsoon rains for warm days, cool nights and passable tracks. This is the window for the Gibb River Road, Cape York and the Savannah Way.
Go south in summer
The southern states flip the script. December to February brings long, warm days to Victoria, Tasmania and southern WA - perfect for the Great Ocean Road, lapping Tasmania, or the South West of WA. Just book campsites well ahead: this is peak domestic-holiday season.
Chase the shoulders - autumn and spring often give you the south’s best weather with a fraction of the crowds.
The outback: aim for the shoulders
The Red Centre, Flinders Ranges and outback Queensland are dangerously hot in summer. Aim for autumn (April-May) or winter (June-August), when days are mild, nights are crisp and the desert is at its most comfortable.
When in doubt, each of our route guides lists the best seasons for that specific trip - start there and build your timing around the drive.
